Cataract Awareness Month: Understanding Cataracts and the Path to Clear Vision
What Is a Cataract?
This Cataract Awareness Month, let’s take a closer look at cataracts and how timely treatment can help preserve clear vision.
A cataract occurs when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, making it difficult for light to pass through clearly. This clouding can cause blurred vision, faded colours, increased sensitivity to light, and difficulty performing everyday activities such as reading or driving.
Most cataracts develop gradually as part of the natural ageing process, although they can also occur due to injury, certain medical conditions, or other factors.
How Does the Eye’s Lens Work?
The lens is located behind the coloured part of the eye, known as the iris, and behind the pupil. Like a camera lens, it focuses incoming light onto the retina at the back of the eye.
The retina converts light into signals that are sent to the brain, allowing us to see. The lens also changes focus to help us see objects both near and far.
For clear vision, the lens must remain transparent so that light can reach the retina without obstruction.
Why Do Cataracts Develop?
The natural lens is made primarily of water and proteins arranged in a precise way to maintain clarity.
As we age, some of these proteins can begin to break down and cluster together. Over time, these clusters create cloudy areas within the lens, known as cataracts.
In the early stages, vision changes may be minimal. As the cataract progresses, the clouding becomes more significant, making vision increasingly blurred and colours less vibrant.
Common Signs of Cataracts
Some of the most common symptoms of cataracts include:
- Blurred or cloudy vision
- Increased sensitivity to bright lights and glare
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Colours appearing dull or faded
- Frequent changes in glasses prescription
- Reduced contrast and visual clarity
Regular eye examinations are important for early detection and timely treatment.
Cataract Surgery: A Safe and Effective Solution
One of the key messages of Cataract Awareness Month is that cataracts can be successfully treated with modern cataract surgery.
During the procedure, the surgeon creates a precise small incision in the eye using Ophthalmic Microsurgical Knives. The cloudy natural lens is then carefully removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
The IOL is selected based on the unique characteristics of each patient’s eye to provide clear and focused vision. Once implanted, the lens remains permanently in place and does not require maintenance.
Modern cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and successful procedures in ophthalmology, helping millions of people restore visual clarity and improve their quality of life.
Seeing Life More Clearly
Clear vision plays an important role in maintaining independence, confidence, and overall well-being.
This Cataract Awareness Month, take the opportunity to learn more about cataracts, recognise the signs of vision changes, and encourage regular eye examinations.
Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help people continue to enjoy the moments that matter most—with greater clarity and confidence.
